- Gifted Healing Hands from Hawaii…here for you now
This website is about my massage therapy service, and my experience of Waiheke Island. If you want to meet me in Summer I will be outside at the Ostend Community Market on Waiheke Island all fair weather Summer Saturday mornings 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon or later — under the striped umbrella. There I offer inexpensive chair massage for neck, back, and shoulder pain which are great for people who work on computers, and which introduce you to my healing touch. Chair massage is done with the client fully clothed on a special massage therapy chair.
Many people who visit magical Waiheke Island, a short ferry ride from Auckland, wonder how people, especially foreigners, end up living there, magnetised by this special place. Waiheke Island has the potential to be a place for physical and emotional healing, for transition, for realignment with one’s higher purpose, and for accessing one’s “right brain” intuition and inner creative muse. Perhaps that is why Waiheke is full of artists, writers, and creative people! Within this site you will find my story, and I invite you to tell me your stories about your Waiheke experiences.
The quest for the soul’s expression can be a beautiful but at times trying journey. Somehow it is easier for some to tune in to their spirit’s call on Waiheke, and those who desire that connection may find it beneficial to spend some time on the island. I used to live in Hawaii, the aloha spirit center of the USA, the birthplace of President Obama, and another possible shapeshifting environment for people in transition. In both Waiheke and Hawaii one can see bumper stickers like ”Slow Down, This Ain’t the Mainland”. It is by slowing down that one has a chance to center and, if desired, reinvent oneself. All islands are special places — I have lived on Vancouver Island in Canada and the islands of Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu in the state of Hawaii, and Waiheke Island in New Zealand.
MY MASSAGE THERAPY SERVICE – A “LONG STORY” INTRODUCTION – FOR SHORT INFO SEE BROCHURE UNDERNEATH THIS
My massage therapy service, Your Healing Resource, is the expression of the natural healing abilities of my hands. In 1985, a long 25 years ago I hate to admit, I shook the hand of an alternative minister in Montecito, California (Oprah’s west coast home town) and the minister asked me what I was doing with the healing ability in my hands. I replied: “Gardening”. I never had a clue I had the healing ability she told me I had a calling to use. I was an intellectual with 8 years of university study, who had interests in healthy diet and lifestyle. A year after this significant connection for me the path started opening for me to do therapeutic body work. Back in Maui, after six months in the Santa Barbara area of California, I met people studying at Honolulu School of Massage, I published a holistic health-related businesses coupon book which helped raise money to conserve Makena Beach on Maui, and through that endeavor, selling the ads and the books, I met many people working in the field of alternative health, from massage therapists to chiropractors, acupuncturists etc.. And from then on doors literally swung open for my path into this occupation. I regularly commuted from Maui to Honolulu by small jet, working part of the week on Maui and studying part of the week at Honolulu School of Massage, in order to complete my studies. All of this was done on a shoestring and was considered a quite unusual way to study 26 years ago. When my massage education finished in Honolulu I continued working in other occupations, while apprenticing in massage therapy under David Salemme of Maui, my all time favorite massage therapist, (and I have experienced the work of dozens of excellent therapists). With David our apprenticeship group learned massage as a spiritual extension of ourselves (the “lomi lomi” Hawaiian tradition), not just a series of techniques and styles. Very few people in this apprenticeship group went on to become massage therapists, perhaps because there was and is no security in massage therapy as an occupation. It is a service that one has to do trusting the universe that the right people will show up. In Hawaii we take state health vocational license exams and we are part of the Hawaii state health system, able to take insurance payments from injured clients who have prescriptions for massage from their medical doctor or chiropractor and to take patients who have corporate tax-deductible health-savings accounts from any state in the USA. This vision of massage therapy as part of the health system is similar to Canada where massage therapy for stress and injuries can be covered on provincial national health plans, and somewhat similar to Australia, where private insurance covers part of the cost of remedial massage therapy treatments.
After massage school and our required 9 month apprenticeship, undergoing a background check, and passing the state exam, I began work the first day I earned my Hawaii state vocational health license, starting at a massage clinic at the Stouffers Wailea Hotel on Maui in Wailea. From then on for 14 years I worked at several hotels and at the same time built my own business, A Massage in Paradise, which served guests at hotels and condominium resorts such as Destination Resorts in Wailea, The Maui Coast Hotel, and Embassy Suites Hotel, as well as clients of wedding consultants, and injured people who had been in car and work related accidents. Included in my Hawaii career were stints at the first famous spa on the island, Grand Wailea Hotel and Spa (a Hyatt hotel) and the Four Seasons Hotel. When The Grand Hyatt Hotel (later Grand Wailea and then later other names as it changed hands) had 15 therapists working at any one time, from 8 in the morning to ten at night seven days a week. This phenomenon was way ahead of its time when it opened in 1990. Both the Grand Wailea and Four Seasons have won national awards for their spas.
There were hundreds of massage therapists on Maui when I worked there. Thus being able to work at these exclusive hotels was both competitive and rewarding. The rich and famous were an everyday part of the clientele at the hotels, and Sharon Stone , the film actress, was my client in my own business, before she became famous in the movie “Basic Instinct”".
If you visit Waiheke Island I am happy to assist you with remedial massage, sports-massage, Hawaiian “lomi lomi” , reflexology, and my general customised style, which can include those modalities and deep tissue, orthobionomy, tragerwork, reiki, cranialsacral techniques, etc. From working with over 11,000 people I have developed a strong intuition regarding relieving pain, reducing stress, and listening to the messages of the body. This is not “beauty therapy”, but as you feel more relaxed through soulful body work, you cannot help but rejuvenate from the inside . There are no miraculous techniques or formulas that do this. Results come from a combination of the willingness of the client to let go of their pain and the mindset and activities that create the pain or stress, and the ability of the therapist to tune in and to assist the release of the pain or stress, with the client’s permission. All my work is always no deeper than the client is comfortable with. That said, I can work very deeply, both physically and spiritually, with those who desire that. From pampering to transformation — there’s the spectrum in which my healing hands can work with you to help make your time on Waiheke Island restorative. 23 years of professional work experience in the field of therapeutic body work matters, and makes a real positive difference in the results I can achieve with you. I look forward to working with you with massage therapy for your health and well being when you visit magical Waiheke Island.
